Varsity Debate - Middle School

Middle School Varsity is built for advanced students ready to refine their craft and compete with confidence. This class dives deep into Public Forum debate, helping students sharpen their logic, polish their delivery, and master the art of persuasion. Participants engage in rigorous drills, strategy sessions, and full debates using current NSDA topics. Students are introduced to competitive best practices, including cutting evidence ("cards"), preparing blockfiles, and simulating tournament rounds. As they prepare for top-level competition, students learn to lead discussions, tackle global issues, and express their ideas with purpose and precision.

Critical Learning Standards:

  • CDA2.1: Construct layered arguments using claims, logical reasoning, and cited evidence.
  • CDA2.2: Anticipate, evaluate, and rebut opposing viewpoints through strategic refutation and weighing.
  • CDA2.3: Cut and organize evidence (“cards”) from credible sources to support arguments across a range of topics.
  • CDA2.4: Develop and maintain structured blockfiles to prepare for commonly encountered arguments in round.
  • CDA2.5: Apply rhetorical techniques—like framing, tone control, and repetition—to enhance persuasive delivery.
  • CDA2.6: Simulate and reflect on tournament experiences, including speaker points, flowing, and round strategy.
  • CDA2.7: Demonstrate leadership in small-group prep, peer feedback, and in-class competitive practice.
