Intro to Debate - Middle School

In this foundational course, students are introduced to the world of public speaking and argumentative thinking in a fun, low-pressure environment. Through engaging games, structured discussions, and short speech exercises, students learn how to express their ideas clearly, organize their thoughts into basic arguments, and respond respectfully to others. They explore everyday topics that matter to them—like school rules, favorite activities, or community issues—to develop early persuasive skills grounded in their lived experiences. This class builds confidence, self-awareness, and a strong baseline for more advanced and competitive debate coursework.

Critical Learning Standards:

  • CDA1.1: Identify and articulate a clear claim on a familiar topic.
  • CDA1.2: Provide a relevant reason and simple example to support an argument.
  • CDA1.3: Listen actively and summarize opposing views in partner or group conversations.
  • CDA1.4: Deliver short, structured persuasive speeches with vocal clarity and eye contact.
  • CDA1.5: Recognize basic rhetorical strategies (e.g., repetition, emotional appeals) in media and peer speech.

Aumrita debated for four years at Fairmont Preparatory Academy. Over the course of her debate career, she earned 24 bids to the Tournament of Champions and championed 9 National Circuit tournaments including the Cal UC Berkeley Invitational, the California Round Robin, NDCAs (2x), Golden Desert Debate Tournament, and more. As a debater, she especially enjoyed reading theory arguments and engaging in fast, technical debate. In her free time, she reads a lot of critical literature including Deleuze and Guattari, Marx, and Derrida, which all have debate applications as well. Outside of debate, she loves playing NYT word games, reading modernist novels, and listening to microjazz. She is excited to work with all of the talented debaters at NDC!
