10-Week Course for High School Students
This introductory course provides high school students with their first comprehensive experience in Public Forum debate. Over ten weeks, students will develop the skills needed to research effectively, construct structured arguments, and collaborate with a partner in real-time competitive settings.
Students will master the core components of Public Forum debate, including case construction, crossfire questioning, rebuttals, and persuasive delivery. The course covers how to find and cite credible evidence, build compelling contentions using the Claim-Warrant-Impact framework, and engage strategically with current events and real-world issues.
Beyond debate mechanics, this course builds public speaking confidence, critical thinking, and collaborative teamwork. Students will learn to analyze arguments, weigh competing impacts, and adapt their approach for different judges and situations.
By the end of the course, students will participate in full-length practice rounds and be fully prepared to join JV or competitive debate teams.

Justin competed in Varsity National Circuit Public Forum debate for three years at Canyon Crest Academy as president and a captain of his school's speech and debate team. As a debater, he has won tournaments such as the California Round Robin and John Lewis, while reaching deep elimination rounds at others including the UK Season Opener and ASU. As a student coach for Canyon Crest, he has utilized his well-rounded and deep understanding of key debate concepts and unique expertise in tech substance instruction to develop several TOC-level teams. Justin is excited to join NDC to give back to the community that has helped him so much through his high school years.
