Creativity, Teamwork, and Collaboration: The 3 Skills Colleges and Employers Both Want

That's not a vibe, it shows up in the actual survey data on both sides. Here's what the research actually says these three skills are worth, and the one activity that happens to train all of them at once.

What Colleges Say They're Looking For

Admissions offices have moved well past "did this student rack up a long activity list." Guidance from college admissions consultancies like IvyWise and Spark Admissions consistently describes the same shift: reviewers are reading extracurriculars for evidence a student can collaborate on shared goals, not just rack up solo accolades. Group projects, team competitions, and collaborative research all get read as evidence a student can contribute to a community rather than just perform for one. AdmissionSight, another admissions consulting firm, specifically flags collaborative extracurriculars as a distinct category worth building toward, separate from leadership titles or individual honors.

Worth being honest about the source here: this is admissions-consultant guidance and pattern-matching from people who read applications for a living, not a peer-reviewed study of what actually moves an admit decision. But it lines up with something colleges say plainly in their own materials: they're building a class, not just ranking individuals, and a class needs people who work well with others.

What Employers Say They Actually Need

On the employer side, the data is more direct. The National Association of Colleges and Employers' Job Outlook 2026 survey, as reported in career-readiness coverage summarizing the survey results, found teamwork and problem-solving sitting at the top of the list of attributes employers want on a candidate's resume, alongside verbal and written communication. The same survey data shows a real gap between what employers say they value and what they actually see in new graduates. On critical thinking specifically, employers rated it as important around 93 to 94 percent of the time, but rated observed proficiency in actual candidates closer to 50 percent, a gap of over 40 points. Teamwork showed the smallest gap of the major competencies, meaning it's one of the few areas where new grads are closer to meeting the bar, but employers still aren't satisfied that most candidates arrive there ready.

Creativity shows up on the forecasting side. The World Economic Forum's Future of Jobs Report 2025 ranks creative thinking among the top five core skills employers say they need right now, and among the skills rising fastest in importance through 2030, alongside adaptability and collaboration-heavy leadership skills. The throughline across both employer surveys is the same: the skills companies say they can't find enough of aren't technical skills, they're the ones that show up when a person has to think of something new and then get a group of people to actually do it.

The Advice You've Probably Already Heard

None of the standard suggestions for building these skills are wrong, and they're worth doing regardless of what else your teen picks up:

  • Team sports and group competitions. Anything with a shared scoreboard forces coordination under pressure, whether that's a soccer team or a robotics competition.
  • Group class projects, taken seriously. Most students treat group projects as something to survive. Encouraging your teen to actually lead the coordination, not just do their slice, is where the collaboration skill gets built.
  • Part-time jobs and volunteer shifts. Working alongside people you didn't choose, on a schedule you don't control, is blunt but effective teamwork practice.
  • Open-ended creative projects. A student film, a band, an independent research project, anything without a fixed right answer forces the "generate an idea nobody handed you" muscle that a worksheet never will.
  • Student government or club leadership. Getting a group of peers to agree on and execute a plan is a distilled version of workplace collaboration.

All of this genuinely helps. The limitation is that most of it is scattered: a student gets creativity practice from the film club and teamwork practice from the soccer team, on two different schedules, with two different coaches, and nobody connecting the two.

The Activity That Trains Both at Once

Here's the gap in almost every list like the one above: competitive debate rarely makes it on there, even though it's structurally built around both skills at the same time. In most debate formats, students compete in pairs or small teams, which means the entire activity runs on the same coordination the "usual advice" list is trying to manufacture separately: dividing research, building a shared strategy, and adjusting that strategy together mid-round when the other side's argument doesn't go the way you planned.

There's real, if still developing, research behind the creativity side of this specifically. A 2026 qualitative study of university debaters, analyzing recordings from the Indonesian Student Debate Competition, found that divergent thinking, the ability to generate a wide range of ideas and connect issues that don't obviously belong together, was the dominant thinking strategy debaters used to build their arguments (Sabriadi, Azis, Jufri, & Juanda, Edelweiss Applied Science and Technology, 2026). On the teamwork side, a peer-reviewed study out of a pharmacy school adapted a team-based-learning debate format for 95 students and found statistically significant self-reported gains across nearly every learning objective the format targeted, with students reporting the biggest improvements in evidence-based reasoning and the format's weakest point being anticipating the other team's argument in advance (Viswesh, Yang, & Gupta, American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education, 2018).

It's worth being straightforward about what that evidence does and doesn't show. Both of those studies looked at university and professional-school students, not high schoolers, and neither one used a randomized design with a comparison group, so they can't prove debate causes creativity or teamwork gains rather than just correlating with them. The strongest, oldest, and most rigorous evidence on debate's cognitive effects is actually about critical thinking, not creativity or teamwork specifically: a widely cited meta-analysis by Allen, Berkowitz, Hunt, and Louden (Communication Education, 1999) found a real but modest positive relationship between forensics participation and critical thinking gains (correlations in the .18 to .20 range across study designs), which is meaningfully smaller than the framing "debate transforms how kids think" usually implies. Extending that finding to creativity and teamwork specifically leans on newer, thinner, and more qualitative research rather than decades of large-sample data. That's a real gap in the evidence, not a reason to dismiss the pattern, just a reason not to oversell it.

What debate does have going for it structurally is that it doesn't require choosing between the two skills the way a solo research project or an individual sport does. A student researching, building a case, and adjusting it live with a partner in front of a judge is practicing creative argument construction and real-time collaboration in the same hour, on a repeating weekly schedule, with a coach giving feedback after every round.

Worth Trying Once

If your teen already plays a sport and already does group projects at school, keep both of those going, they're genuinely useful.
