How to Improve Critical Thinking Skills in High School Students

Your teenager can find any fact in about three seconds. A quick search, a question to ChatGPT, done. What's a lot harder for them, and honestly for most adults too, is knowing whether that fact is actually true, the source's bias, and how to build a real argument once they've got the information in hand. That gap between finding an answer and actually thinking it through is what separates okay students from great ones.

Here's the good part. Critical thinking is a skill, not a fixed trait your kid either has or doesn't, and it responds to the same thing most skills respond to: practice, with real feedback, over and over. What "Critical Thinking" Actually Means for a Teenager

Strip away the jargon and critical thinking comes down to a handful of habits: asking good questions, weighing evidence instead of just accepting the first answer, noticing your own assumptions, and considering a perspective you don't already agree with before you land on a conclusion. It's not the same thing as being smart, and it's not the same thing as being a good student. Plenty of kids who ace tests are still pretty easy to fool with a confident-sounding argument, because school rewards recalling the right answer far more often than it rewards questioning where the answer came from.

That distinction matters for parents because it means you can't just wait for critical thinking to show up as a side effect of good grades. It has to be practiced on purpose, somewhere.

Why This Feels So Urgent Right Now

If this concern feels sharper than it did a few years ago, that's not just a parenting anxiety spiral, there's real data behind it. RAND surveyed a nationally representative group of American youth for its American Youth Panel and found that AI homework use among middle and high schoolers jumped from 48% in May 2025 to 62% by December 2025. More striking: as of December 2025, 67% of students themselves agreed with the statement that the more students use AI for schoolwork, the more it will harm their critical thinking skills, up more than 10 percentage points from just ten months earlier (Schwartz & Diliberti, RAND Corporation, "More Students Use AI for Homework, and More Believe It Harms Critical Thinking," March 2026). Students aren't oblivious to the tradeoff. They're using the tool and worrying about the cost at the same time, which is a strange spot to leave a teenager in without any real support.

That's the honest backdrop here. It's not that phones or AI are uniquely evil. It's that when a shortcut to any answer is always one tap away, the muscle for actually working through a problem gets less exercise unless something specifically calls on it.

If you've gone looking for ways to build this in your teen already, you've probably run into the same handful of suggestions, and they're not wrong:

  • Ask open-ended questions instead of yes/no ones. At the dinner table, swap "Are you sure?" for "What makes you think that?" or "What would change your mind?" It's free, takes ten seconds, and pushes them to defend their reasoning instead of just answering.
  • Puzzles, logic games, and strategy games like chess or Sudoku, which force a kid to plan several moves ahead and adjust when a plan doesn't hold up. Keep a deck of cards or a puzzle book somewhere visible at home so it's an easy default during downtime instead of a phone.
  • Media literacy practice: pick one article or video a week and spend five minutes asking together who wrote it, why, and what they might be leaving out, rather than taking a headline at face value.
  • Journaling or talking through decisions out loud: before a real decision, like a purchase or a schedule conflict, have them write or say out loud the strongest argument for each option before choosing. It slows down snap judgments enough to notice the reasoning behind them.
  • Exposure to real disagreement: once a week, read or watch something arguing the opposite of what your teen already believes, then talk through which points actually landed.

All of that genuinely helps. None of it is a waste of time. But most of these are things a parent has to manufacture and sustain on their own, with no coach, no structure, and no built-in reason for a teenager to keep showing up to do it.

Where Executive Function Fits In

Critical thinking doesn't operate on its own. It leans hard on executive function, the set of mental skills that let a person plan ahead, hold information in working memory while they use it, and switch approaches when the first one isn't working. The Center on the Developing Child at Harvard University describes executive function skills as the mental processes that let us plan, focus attention, switch gears, and juggle multiple pieces of information at once, and notes they develop over childhood and adolescence, not all at once. A teen with weak executive function can technically know the steps of good reasoning and still struggle to apply them under pressure, because organizing an argument on the fly asks a lot of the same "hold this, weigh that, adjust now" machinery.

That's worth knowing, because it explains why some kids seem to understand critical thinking in theory (they can define it on a worksheet) but visibly struggle to actually do it live, in a conversation, when it counts.

The Activity Most Parents Leave Off the List: Debate

Here's the gap. Go through almost every list of "critical thinking activities for teens" online and you'll find puzzles, games, journaling, and media literacy exercises. You'll rarely find debate, even though it's arguably the activity built most directly around the exact skills on that list.

Competitive debate isn't just "arguing." Structurally, it requires a student to research a topic, build a case with actual evidence behind it, anticipate the strongest version of the other side's argument before they've even heard it, and then adjust their reasoning live when a judge or opponent pokes a hole in it. That's argument construction, evidence evaluation, and counterargument anticipation, done under a clock, in front of people, over and over, every week. Puzzles ask a kid to think. Debate asks them to think, defend the thinking out loud, and revise it on the spot when it doesn't hold up.

The research backs this up. A study of Boston Public Schools by researchers Beth E. Schueler and Katherine E. Larned found that participation in policy debate, an extracurricular built around critical thinking, argumentation, and analysis, produced ELA test score gains equivalent to 68% of a full year of average 9th grade learning, with gains concentrated specifically in analytical subskills rather than rote ones. The effects were largest for students who were the lowest achieving before they joined debate (Schueler & Larned, "Interscholastic Policy Debate Promotes Critical Thinking and College-Going: Evidence From Boston Public Schools," EdWorkingPaper No. 23-825, Annenberg Institute at Brown University, 2023). That's not a small, feel-good anecdote. That's a measurable jump in analytical thinking tied directly to a structured activity most confidence and skill-building lists never mention.

This isn't a brand-new idea either. Educators in health sciences fields have used debate as a teaching strategy for exactly this reason for years, specifically because it builds "competence in researching current issues, preparing logical arguments, actively listening to various perspectives, differentiating between subjective and evidence-based information, asking cogent questions, integrating relevant information, and formulating their own opinions based on evidence" (Darby, "Debate: A Teaching-Learning Strategy for Developing Competence in Communication and Critical Thinking," Journal of Dental Hygiene, 2007). If it's structured enough to train dental hygiene students in evidence-based reasoning, it's structured enough to build the same muscle in a high schooler.

Putting It Together

None of this means throw out the puzzles and the media literacy conversations; keep doing those. But if the goal is actually building critical thinking, not just talking about wanting your teen to have it, the highest-leverage move is putting them somewhere that requires the skill on a recurring schedule, with a coach watching and real feedback after every round. That's a different category of activity than "do a logic puzzle when you think of it."
