How does the North Carolina Speech & Debate Circuit Work?

The North Carolina Speech & Debate circuit is known as the Tarheel Forensic League (TFL). The TFL circuit has a set of competitive tournaments that they host each year, which you can find here.

When and Where are TFL Tournaments?

TFL local tournaments typically occur on the weekends (occasionally including Friday) from early September to late April and occur all throughout the state at venues, such as Eastside High School, North Mecklenburg High School, and Riverside High School.

What competitive events does the North Carolina Speech & Debate State Tournament offer?

The North Carolina Speech & Debate State Tournament offers the following events for competition: Congressional Debate, Lincoln Douglas Debate, Public Forum Debate, Declamation, Dramatic Interpretation, Duo Interpretation, Extemporaneous Speaking, Humorous Interpretation, Impromptu Speaking, Informative Speaking, Original Oratory, and Program Oral Interpretation.

How to Qualify for the TFL State Tournament for Each Event?

Contrary to other states, every Speech & Debate event has the same qualifying methodology in North Carolina. There are four ways to qualify for the TFL Speech & Debate State Tournament in your particular event.

The first way to qualify is through a qualification bid system. To qualify through this method, you must accumulate at least one (1) qualification bids to the TFL State Speech & Debate tournament. You must also earn these bids at tournaments that meet the following pre-requisites: have at least eight (8) participating schools and have at least two (2) schools competing in each event that offers bids. To earn a bid, you must reach a certain elimination round. The elimination round that you must reach is based on the entry count of the specific division. FThe guidelines to do so are as follows: one (1) bid for two (2) to six (6) entries, three (3) bids for seven (7) to eleven (11) entries), and six (6) bids for twelve (12) or more entries. 

The second way to qualify is to earn four (4) legs. To earn a “leg”, you must compete in all preliminary rounds at a TFL-sanctioned tournament regardless of final placement. Any competitor who earns at least four (4) legs in the same year during a competition year is eligible to participate at the TFL Speech & Debate State Tournament.

The third way to qualify is being designated as a “wildcard entry” by your Speech & Debate coach. The “wildcard entry” system is designed to admit students that do not qualify to the TFL State Tournament under a previously mentioned qualification method. Each TFL member school receives five (5) wildcard entries for all Speech & Debate events cumulatively. Your Speech & Debate coach is able to designate the entries to students based on their discretion (i.e. the Speech & Debate coach at your school has the ability to decide which competitors will represent their school as a “wildcard entry”).

The fourth and final way to qualify is through an automatic qualification process. There are three (3) ways that you can auto-qualify to the TFL Speech & Debate State Tournament: qualifying to the TFL Speech & Debate State Tournament in a previous year based on the previously aforementioned methodology, earning a bid to the Tournament of Champions (you can learn more about the procedure to do that here!), and/or qualifying to the National Speech & Debate Tournament (you can learn more about the qualification procedure here!).

How to Prepare
