Red Herring

Red Herring

A red herring is a fallacy that introduces irrelevant information into an argument to divert attention from the original issue. This tactic can confuse the audience and lead them away from the main point of discussion.

For instance, if a debate about climate change shifts to discussing the personal life of a scientist, that is a red herring. It distracts from the critical issues at hand and can derail productive discourse.
