Sim Low

Academy Class Instructor | Johns Hopkins

Sim has been involved in competitive debate for over a decade as a competitor, judge, and coach. She has judged more than 400 rounds across multiple formats, developing a deep understanding of argumentative strategy, norms, and stylistic variation. Most notably, she has judged Public Forum Finals at the Tournament of Champions and Lincoln-Douglas Finals at the National Debate Coaches Association Championships.

As a coach, Sim has worked both privately and with four programs, including serving as Head Debate Coach at Georgetown Day School. Her students have achieved significant competitive success, qualifying for national tournaments, advancing to late elimination rounds at the Tournament of Champions, and continuing on to the college policy debate circuit.

Beyond debate, Sim has a background in social science research, with a focus on Asian American Studies, education, and the history of medicine. She credits debate with shaping the analytical and research skills central to her academic work and brings this perspective into her mentorship. Sim emphasizes rigorous research and advocacy. She works with students to not only succeed competitively, but also to understand the broader impact of debate as a tool for critical thinking, research, and meaningful engagement with their communities.
